Guillermo del Toro Releases ‘Pacific Rim’ Trailer Featuring "2,500 Tons Of Awesome" Robot And Monster Footage After WonderCon [VIDEO]

Guillermo del Toro is returning to the box office this summer with the action-packed film Pacific Rim. After an intensive discussion and preview of the film at CinemaCon a few weeks ago, del Toro released a new online-exclusive trailer for Pacific Rim.

The film is set in the near future and features an alien race that emerges from the sea via an inter-dimensional portal and attempts to eliminate humanity, "the vermin". In the new trailer, viewers see that humanity fights back - in the form of unfathomably massive robots called Jaegers piloted by humans.

Earlier this week, del Toro appeared at WonderCon in Anaheim to promote Pacific Rim and share extra footage to the convention's audience. After a push from fans, del Toro released the movie footage, originally to be kept exclusively for the convention, to the Internet.

Del Toro wrote a note to fans on the YouTube footage's description box:

"This was originally intended for only WonderCon, but after listening to so many of you asking for more of the movie online, I think it's time for me to show you more footage. Enjoy, my friends!

The preview hints at the awesome special effects that the movie will contain, while keeping audiences in the dark - literally. The preview shows scenes in the rain and at night, keeping much of the monsters and robots' design a secret.

Del Toro co-wrote the Pacific Rim screenplay with Travis Beacham. The film was shot almost completely in Pinewood Toronto Studios, using the facility's eight sound stages from November 2011 to April 2012, according to the LA Times.

Del Toro told Hero Complex, "We built parts of the robots, and the only thing that would fit in the largest stage in North America was the feet. That's it."

"[It's] 2,500 tons of awesome," said Charlie Day, who plays Dr. Newton Geiszler in the film. After seeing the new trailer, fans are sure to agree.

Pacific Rim opens on July 12th. It also stars Idris Elba, Charlie hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi and Ron Perlman.
