'The Voice' Recap: Adam Levine and Shakira Choose Their Four Team Members in Knockout Round

"The Voice" began its knockout round Monday night as Team Adam and Team Shakira whittled down to four members each. The knockout round is the instant elimination round between the Battles and the live shows. By the end of the week, 32 contestants will be trimmed down to only 16 (four from each team) to compete for viewers' votes next week.

Shakira and Adam paired up their contestants and coached them on a song of the vocalist's choosing. After the singers performed against each other in front of an audience, the coaches selected one singer from each pair to make it through to the next round. The other was sent home.

Six of the remaining eight contestants on Adam's and Shakira's teams are female.

The results of the night were rather predictable. On Team Shakira, Garrett Gardner won over Tawnya Reynolds. Kris Thomas, Karina Iglesias, and Sasha Allen joined Garrett to head to the next round.

Adam paired Judith Hill and Orland Dixon. As expected, Judith advanced.

Folk singer Midas Whale, a "show favorite," took on 19-year-old Amber Carrington, "the biggest surprise," Adam said. Carrington blew away Whale with her rendition of Avril Lavigne's "I'm With You," dedicated to her mother who passed away from breast cancer.

Sarah Simmons and Caroline Glaser joined Carrington and will advance to the live playoffs round.

Blake and Usher will pick their four team members when the knockout round continues Tuesday night.
