5 Shot, 1 Killed At Crab Festival: Devonte Tremaine Ocasio Arrested In Williston, Florida

One man is dead and four were wounded following a shooting at the annual "Crabfest" event, a huge outdoor party in Williston, Florida. Police have arrested Devonte Tremaine Ocasio, 19, on charges of attempted murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He is being held on $1.5 million bond.

Around 10,000 people attended the annual street festival. "While it is called the Crab Festival, it is actually a series of 'Hip Hop'-style street parties," the Levy County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

Crabfest has no corporate or government sponsors. Instead, promotion of the festival relies solely on social media and word of mouth, The Sun-Sentinel reports.

The violence at the street party occurred despite efforts by police to ensure the safety of its revelers.

"The large crowds made it impossible for ambulances to reach the wounded," the statement added. "Despite the large crowds walking and dancing in the roadway, deputies and EMS personnel were able to evacuate the victims in law enforcement and private vehicles."

The statement mentioned that the event has been the scene of violence in the past. Sheriff's spokesman Lt. Scott Tummond suggested that the shooting was related to criminal gangs. "Our office believes this may have been motivated by some type of drug-related crimes," he says.

Tummond added that witnesses are reluctant to come forward with any information. They fear retaliation by local crime organizations. "Lots of folks saw stuff but don't want to come forward either because they are scared or don't want to get involved," he said.

The Levy County Sheriff's Office is following leads regarding a possible second shooter.
