Mountain Dew Online Ad Pulled: Tyler The Creator Responds to "Most Racist Ad In History" [WATCH VIDEO]

A Mountain Dew ad has been pulled by PepsiCo after the commercial was widely criticized as racist and sexist. Some had called it "the most racist commericial in history".

The Mountain Dew ad that was pulled shows police asking a severely beaten white woman to pick out her attacker from a police line-up of all black men and a goat. The goat's voice and the questionable mastermind behind the ad is Tyler, The Creator, who heads the hip-hop group Odd Future and developed the ad. The men in the line up are played by members of Odd Future. The goat, a Mountain Dew-crazed character from a series of other ads, tells the woman to keep her mouth shut because "snitches get stitches."

Dr. Boyce Watkins, widely respected social critic and Syracuse University professor, dubbed the ad "arguably the most racist commercial in history." He said, "Mountain Dew has set a new low for corporate racism. Their decision to lean on well-known racial stereotypes is beyond disgusting. This doesn't even include the fact that the company has put black men on par with animals."

The ad's portrayal of black men provoked instantaneous condemnation across the board. Tyler the Creator's manager issued a statement on Tumblr, in which he claimed the Mountain Dew ad was "never meant to be taken seriously" but that the situation was "layered with context and is a discussion that Tyler would love to address". It reminded readers that Tyler is "known for pushing boundaries and challenging stereotypes thru humor", citing the comedian Dave Chapelle, and that "his demographic understands what he ultimately stands for and sees the irony of it all".

Pepsi announced its decision to pull the ads on Wednesday."We understand how this video could be perceived by some as offensive, and we apologize to those who were offended," they said in a statement. "We have removed the video from all Mountain Dew channels and have been informed that Tyler is removing it from his channels as well."

And, for the morbildy curious, you can watch a video of the ad below.
