Teacher Buys 50 Shades Of Grey Book For Students, Mother Incensed And Said “This Is Not Okay To Me”

A blogger calls it the teacher 50 Shades of Grey incident, primarily because it has incensed a parent so much that the teacher was suspended for it.

Philip Aidoo, the Eastern University Academy Charter School teacher, purchased the 50 Shades of Grey book for his ninth-grade students. Aidoo has previously asked pupils for a list of books that they’d be interested in reading.

One of the student’s mother found the book in her son’s backpack and was incensed. She then rang the East Falls school and contacted officials who have now begun an investigation into the purchase. Because of the incident, Aidoo has been suspended for a week without pay.

Yvonne Turner, the school’s Chief Operating Officer, confirmed the above and also stated, “We’re not adding anything anymore” comment on the matter.

Turner said, “Unfortunately, Mr. Aidoo did not have an awareness of this popular book and ordered it with his own money,” and added that he purchased the book for many other students.

Maya Ladson, the student’s mother who complained about the teacher’s 50 Shades of Grey purchase, exclaimed, “This is not okay to me. This is major.”

She added, “It clearly states on the cover, that the book is for mature audiences and has high sexual content. This was a 100 percent act of negligence. There should never be pornographic material purchased and distributed to a student by a school teacher.”

“I find it highly unlikely that a teacher who teaches reading and has a classroom for sustained silent reading period is unaware of contents of material that he’s giving to the students.”

E.L. Jame’s Fifty Shades of Grey revolves around the sexual relationship between Christian Grey and the college student Anastasia Steele and has become a mega bestseller. Over 65 million copies of the title has been sold and widely anticipated adaptation is in the works, expected to be released in 2014 through Universal Pictures and Focus Features.
