Why Girl Group Members Quitting Becomes a Hot Issue

Even when TVXQ split into current TVXQ and JYJ, there was not as much controversy as KARA's scandal that pitted Gyuri against the rest of the team or the ongoing drama around T-ARA, whose member, Hwayoung, ended up quitting the teams after rumors about bullying surfaced to the public. Considering the enormous popularity of TVXQ at the time, which far surpassed the sum of all girl groups, it is shocking how fast and large girl-group troubles spread, like wildfire on a dry summer day.

Typically, the most common reason stated for quitting is 'academic' and simply 'personal reasons.' Sometimes, it is true. Other times, it is more complicated.

Other than when a celebrity on a constant spotlight suddenly and genuinely want to turn back to leading a normal life, it is usually the management company that gives the to-be-ousted member a pink slip. There may be various reasons-overbearing parents who interfere with management, guy problems that reflect poorly on the team, chemistry issues within the team due to personality differences, etc.

Understandably, all of the above less-than-ideal reasons for quitting are wrapped up under the collective 'academic' or 'personal' reason to preserve the integrity of the team and the individual who will now go back to living as a nonpublic figure.

All in all, the truth resides only with the parties directly involved with the situation at hand. Rumors among entertainment circles, official news reports, off-the-record comments online, while they may hold some amounts of truth, need to be taken with a huge grain of salt. Like most accidents and fights, the blame in situations like T-ARA's bullying controversy probably goes to both parties, though in different extents.

In fact, most reasonable people understand that. The public, however, still gravitates toward troubles within girl groups for obvious reasons. What really goes on behind the stage for the flawless, beautiful girls we see on stage? That is what every person's dark, twisted side wants to hear about.

T-ARA will address the bullying controversy for the first time on TV on May 6 on 'Beatles Code.' We will see whether their words will bring closure to the craze or further fan the fire. The only thing to be sure is that everyone will be tuning in.
