Florida Water Polo Team Loser Caused Chaos At Handshake Line After Launching Opponent Into The Water With Foul Move

A Florida water polo team member who competed for a state title caused chaos during the handshake at the end of a match after a foul move that launch his opponent into the water. The incident ensued after the state water polo championship between traditional rivals Ft. Lauderdale (Fla) St. Thomas Aquinas (STA) and Miami (Fla) Belen Jesuit School.

As reported by the Miami Herald and captured on video by YouTube Channel Water Polo, STA got the better of Belen Jesuit School by a final score of 13-10. The winning match for STA got the school’s first water polo title match in the process.

With the title decided, the teams lined up to walk through the traditional handshake line after the games, it was a classic high school sports gesture aimed at maintaining a sense of friendships and collegiality, not to mention good old sportsmanship. What resulted, however, was a brawl when a Belen player used the opportunity to do a foul move, launching one of the STA players into the pool rather than shake his hand.

The resulting commotion was exactly what you would expect to merge from two longtime rivals in such a highly-tensed faceoff. STA team members immediately jumped in to defend their now-immersed teammate, while Belen players responded in kind once the STA players reached the handshake line instigator. Coaches from both teams were able to intervene and stop the shoving from escalating into something worse, however, it was after emotions were frayed and tensions reached a heightened level.

The teams made up though at the end, with a group of Belen players apologizing to their rivals for the teammate’s actions, although it did not make the move less sportsmanlike nor did it keep the video that captured the incident to go viral.

According to Yahoo! Sports Cameron Smith, "Considering the fact that the game marked the final matchup of the 2013 season, that shove could mark the last act of one young man’s water polo career. That’s a shame, both for him, his school and the sense of friendship fostered when high school sports work as they should."
