Lotto Mistake $14 Million: A California Lotto Mistake Ends Up Netting $14 Million

A lotto mistake ended up netting $14 million. Last week, a woman in California made a mistake while buying lotto tickets and won a cool $14 million in the lottery.

Thuan Le, a single California mother with four sons, had a habit of buying lottery tickets each Wednesday from the local CVS store near her home.  Le had a habit of always spending $5. She would spend $4 on Powerball tickets and $1 on a SuperLotto Plus ticket.

However, last week she accidentally put $6 into the machine instead of the usual $5, and so instead of going through the hassle of getting the extra dollar back, she decided to just buy an extra SuperLotto Plus ticket.

And that extra ticket was the one that somehow ended up winning Le $14 million.

According to a press release from the California Lottery's website, "She [Le] accidentally put $6 in the self-service terminal and bought her tickets. When she realized she still had $1 in credit, she thought, 'I might as well get another SuperLotto Plus ticket.' That 6th ticket was the winner."

After she bought the ticket and the numbers were drawn, a friend asked if she'd checked her numbers. She hadn't, so her friend went to go get the winning numbers. When the friend came back with the numbers and all of Le's matched the winning numbers on the ticket she had bought accidentally, Le rushed over to the CVS to scan her ticket and check for herself.

The press release described, "When she ran her SuperLotto Plus ticket through the terminal and realized she had won a $14 million jackpot, she ran screaming out of the store!"

Le called her sons  to tell them the good news and they thought she was joking.

The press release said, "We thought she was joking," her son explained, "but we thought would she really joke like this? My older brother said, 'yes, she would'."  They quickly realized she was not joking and couldn't be happier for their mom."

With her winnings, Le plans to travel, including to visit her parents in Vietnam, and to buy a house.

When Le calmed down, she went to the California Lottery's Santa Ana District Office to claim her winnings. Le's lotto mistake really paid off!

In addition, the CVS where Le purchased her mistake lotto ticket will get about $70,000 from the California lottery for being the outlet to sell the winning ticket.

Le's ticket was purchased at a CVS Pharmacy in Mission Viejo, Calif. The winning numbers were 5, 33, 25, 46, 32, and the Mega number 26.
