Tom Cruise Signs On For 'Mission: Impossible 5'

Tom Cruise has agreed to a fifth "Mission: Impossible" movie. The Tom Cruise movie is still looking for a director and a writer.

Tuesday, Paramount announced in a press release that the 50-year-old actor will return to the franchise as Ethan Hunt. He first played the role in 1996.

In 2010, Cruise's involvement in the series was less certain. There was speculation that Jeremy Renner was in line to replace Cruise in the fourth installment. This would bring in the younger actor, who played Hawkeye in 2012's 'The Avengers,' to carry on the franchise.

However, Cruise ended up sealing the deal and took the lead role as Ethan Hunt; Renner was his co-star in the fourth "Mission: Impossible."

The fifth film still doesn't have a director or a writer, but Cruise has agreed to produce.

Deadline suspects that Christopher McQuarrie is the likely director due to his frequent collaboration with Cruise in multiple films. Deadline also says that the writer and director will be finalized shortly.

"Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" was the latest in the series, and earned $209 million domestically, and almost $700 million worldwide. According to the Paramount statement, this was Cruise's highest grossing film.
