It's safe to say there's not enough representation of Asians in the music and entertainment industry in the U.S. And if there is, the Asian stereotypes still linger.
However, the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival might be the stepping stone to get Asian-American musicians in the world of hip-hop. In a recent press release, a documentary directed by TIME's Salima Koroma and produced by Jaeki Cho, BAD RAP will shed light on Asian-Americans who are breaking the boundaries in the hip-hop game in the states.
"BAD RAP follows the lives and careers of four Asian-American rappers trying to break into a world that often treats them as outsiders," Tribeca Film Festival said in a press release. "Sharing dynamic live performance footage and revealing interviews, these artists make the most skeptical critics into believers."
Representing the east and west coasts, the 81-minute documentary will feature rappers Dumbfoundead, Awkwafina, Rekstizzy and Lyricks as they show the successful moments and struggles they face as a minority in the game.
With a documentary like BAD RAP in the Tribeca Film Festival, there is no way but up for Asian-Americans to be represented in the world of music and entertainment.
Congratulations to Director Salima Koroma, Jaeki Cho and all the rappers involved. BAD RAP is a documentary that is definitely anticipated.
