NASCAR Chief Divorce Docs Unsealed: Former Exec Said Ex-Wife Spent “Staggering” Amount Of Fortune

The NASCAR chief’s divorce docs have been unsealed Wednesday with the court documents showing that the former wife of Brian France spent a “staggering” amount of his fortune on her family and friends. But according to Megan France, her former husband spent little time with their two children and was verbally abusive at some point when Brian didn’t get what he wants.

The huge volume of divorce documents that were unsealed Wednesday exposes new details on the couple’s bitter second divorce, years after the contentious 2008 breakup. France’s lawyer had fought for years to keep the records confidential, but failed to do so when in the end, the NASCAR chief divorce docs had to be made public.

France married Megan, based in Charlotte, NC, twice and they divorced twice as well. Their first marriage lasted from 2001 to 2004, but married again in 2005. Their second divorce was finalized in 2008.

Many news organizations fought to unseal the documents, arguing that they were public records. Last year, a North Carolina appeals court agreed, resulting to Wednesday’s release of 3,000 pages of documents, which includes scores of court motions, depositions and emails.

Based on statements in open court, the couple’s 2008 separation agreement included paying Megan France $9 million, an alimony of $32,000 a month for 10 years and a $10,000 a month child support.

Telephone inquiries by the Associated Press with the law firms representing each weren’t immediately returned Wednesday. A NASCAR spokesman told the AP Wednesday that that the organization doesn’t comment on lawsuits.

The unsealed divorce docs showed that Brian France is wealthy.

A 2005 financial statement included in the court documents showed that the NASCAR chief has $564 million in total assets – including stock and real estate – and that he was likely to inherit “substantial wealth from his parents,” the total value of which could exceed $1 billion. NASCAR, a multibillion dollar business and one of the most popular sports in the world, was founded by France’s grandfather.

Records show that Brian France continued to fight after he agreed to deal with his former. His wife claims that she was the primary caregiver of their twin children, both of whom were born in 2006.

Megan said in recent records that she was trying to create a stable home for Charlotte, while France spent of his time in Daytona Beach, Fla., the headquarters for NASCAR.

"Brian has demanded that I make the children available whenever and wherever he desires. He expects me and the children to be at his `beck and call' regardless of the specific terms of the agreement.'' The NASCAR chief's ex-wife said in an affidavit on March 2, 2011.

In one case, court records reveal that Brian France failed to pay $52,000 in governess expenses from August 2008 to February 2009. He also failed to give Megan the $3 million she was due on Jan. 1, 2009, based on the records.

Megan also said that "Brian becomes verbally abusive when I will not follow his dictates...I believe Brian is continuing to try to punish me for not being willing to change the terms we agreed to in the agreement because he is now unhappy with them."

But France, in an email she sent her ex-wife in Sept. 27, 2008 said that he was unhappy with the way she was spending the money given to her.

He claims in the court documents that Megan spent a staggering amount of money over the years on her friends and family. He also said that she violated terms of their confidentiality agreement by talking to their friends about the settlement with him and making derogatory remarks about him.
