Body of Suspected Boston Marathon Bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev Buried Outside Massachusetts

According to published reports, the body of Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the suspected Boston Marathon bomber, was buried outside of Massachusetts. The suspect’s remains were removed yesterday from the Graham Putnam & Mahoney Funeral Parlors, where they had been kept since last Friday. Worcester police confirmed that Tsarnaev's body was buried, but did not disclose the location.

The Worcester police said in a statement, “As a result of our public appeal for help a courageous and compassionate individual came forward to provide the assistance needed to properly bury the deceased. His body is no longer in the city of Worcester and is now entombed.”

Tsarnaev’s uncle, Ruslan Tsarni, who had represented the family, approved the burial location after he and the funeral home director, Peter Stefan, found a cemetery outside the city of Worcester that was willing to accept the remains. No cemetery had been found that would receive the body by Monday evening. The uncle said “A dead person needs to be buried.” Tsarni at first insisted that Tsarnaev be buried in Massachusetts, but most cemeteries in the state refused to accept the body.

Government officials passed around the responsibility for the burial. Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick said the burial was up to the family, not government. On Monday, he told reporters that “the family has some options. I assume they will make a decision soon. I hope they do.”

Boston Globe reporter Wesley Lowery tweeted that the "body left Worcester funeral home before midnight [and] has been buried out of state in a plan approved by uncle Ruslan Tsani."

Tsarnaev's widow, Katherine Russell, who has not been charged with any crime, continues to meet with federal authorities. Her attorney, Amato DeLuca, said that she hired Joshua Dratel, a criminal lawyer who represented a number of terrorism suspects in federal and military courts, to help her case. DeLuca said that Dratel’s "unique, specialized experience" will help Russell "assist in the ongoing investigation in the most constructive way possible." He said Russell has been questioned "part of a series of meetings over many hours where she has answered questions." DeLuca maintains that Russell had no reason to suspect her husband and his brother in the April 15 bombing. The FBI didn’t comment when asked whether Russell is cooperating.

Tamerlan died on April 19 during a shootout with police.
