New Zealand “Sea Monster” Identified As Killer Whale [PHOTO]

A mysterious carcass was discovered last week on a New Zealand beach. The New Zealand "Sea Monster," as it has been named, has been identified by an expert as the remains of a killer whale, or orca. The 30-foot caracass' decomposing body, eyeless head, and gaping jaws led many to speculate that it was a sea monster or a dinosaur.

The carcass was discovered by a group speeding along the beach in Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. A Youtube video posted by Elizabeth Ann has had almost 1.2 million views. Others believed it looked like a crocodile, dolphin, or giant eel. Others thought it was an elaborate prank.

Marine biologist Van Helden told New Zealand's 3 News that the remains were those of an orca killer whale. He said the distinctive flipper was the clue that led him to this identification.

This isn't the first bizarre-looking carcass to wash up on shore, according to Discovery. Marine "blobsters," or large carcasses so badly decomposed that it is difficult to identify them, have perplexed researchers for years, Huffington Post reports. Now with technology, scientists can test tissue samples with electron microscopes to determine the species.
