'Top Gun 2' Plot Details Revealed! 'Mission Impossible 5' Star Tom Cruise In Drone Warfare! Production To Start Soon?

A "Top Gun 2" movie has been rumored for years following its original release in 1986.

And while the project has already been confirmed, details about it have been really scarce.

But during the recent presscon of "Terminator Genisys" in Berlin, Skydance CEO David Ellison dropped the bomb about "Top Gun 2's" Plot details.

According to Collider, the executive revealed that Lt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell is now going to battle with the drones.

"Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now," Ellison said. "He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy have turned into today."

He added, "It is very much the world we live in today where it's drone technology and fifth generation fighters ... It's really exploring the end of an era of dogfighting and fighter pilots and what that culture is today."

Ellison's statement could be reflected in Jerry Bruckheimer's previous claims saying,

"The concept is, basically, are the pilots obsolete because of drones," Bruckheimer explained of the sequel's plot. "Cruise is going to show them that they're not obsolete. They're here to stay."

"It's just getting to the starting place. Fortunately for Tom, he's very busy, so you have to find a slot he can fit into and get a budget that [studio] Paramount feels they can make the picture."

And while he did no specifically confirmed it, Ellison hinted that original cast member Tom Cruise will reprise his role in "Top Gun 2."

"There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie, and there is no 'Top Gun' without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick," Ellison said.

The 52-year-old "Mission Impossible 5" star previously hinted the possibility of his return in the movie saying,

''With movies, they each have their time - when it's ready to be made. If we can get over some stumbling blocks it will be fun to do," Sky News reported.

Together with Skydance, Paramount Pictures together with Jerry Bruckheimer are very much determined to bring back Lt. Maverick to the big screen

"We'll likely make a Top Gun sequel with Tom Cruise first," Paramount head of production Adam Goodman revealed.

And while the team has been trying to work on the "Top Gun 2" movie 30 years following its original release, Jerry Bruckheimer is determined to make things right this time with the plot, the timeline, and the release date.

"We've been trying to get that movie made for 30 years, and I think we're getting closer and closer," he told The Huffington Post

"Don (Simpson) and I tried to develop something, we didn't succeed. (Tom) Cruise took over, and he tried to develop something, and he didn't succeed. Now we're back at it," he explained.
