Lena Horne, Singer, Actress, Life Celebrated Three Years After Her Death In 2010 [VIDEO]

Singer and actress Lena Horne died at 92 in her New York City home three years ago Friday from heart failure. Three years later, the social media still remembers the legacy of Lena Horne. So, who was Lena Horne, singer and actress?

Lena Horne broke through the color-barrier in Hollywood when she signed a long-term deal with an agency, making her the first black woman to do so. She became a mainstay in Hollywood through her music and her acting.

President Obama said in a statement following Lena Horne's death in 2010 that Horne "worked tirelessly to further the cause of justice and equality."

Horne was a four-time Grammy Award winner, which her last award came in 1995 for "Best jazz vocal performance."

She was also a pioneer on black women making it in Hollywood. She admits to knowing what history she was making and how she wanted to push the envelope in the public eye and stir the pot even more.

In her as-told-to autobiography Lena by Richard Schickel, Horne recounts the enormous pressures she and her husband faced as an interracial couple. She later admitted in an interview in Ebony (May 1980), she had married Hayton to advance her career and cross the "color-line" in show business, but had learned to love him in a way.

Horne was first a nightclub fixture before entering the world of Hollywood.

One of her last successful performances was in her own one-woman show on Broadway. The show, "Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music," which ran for more than three hundred performances on Broadway, earned her numerous awards and accolades.
