Air Force One Plane Up For Sale, Auction Starting At Around $50,000

Air Force One will be on sale this week, starting at around $50,000. Federal officials from the General Services Administration are planning to sell a plane that once served as Air Force One. It's an extraordinary piece of history that will be on sale to the public and has a minimum starting bid of $50,000.

The plane was Air Force One for decades, and flew every President from Ford to George W. Bush-plus the Vice President, First Lady, and other guests of each administration.

The General Services Administration Facebook site that announced the sale said, "It's not often we get to sell a piece of history like this, but GSA Auctions is selling this plane that flew Presidents Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush, Clinton & Bush (as well as the Vice-President, First Lady, Cabinet secretaries, 4-star generals, admirals, foreign dignitaries and more)."

The GSA Air Force One auction will also include a bevy of other federal equipment. Up for grabs in the auction, there will be space shuttle parts, scientific items, vessels, vehicles, real estate, and heavy machinery that are considered excess or surplus.  The auction is slated to begin on Wednesday at 11 AM (EST) and the minimum starting bid is $50,000 for the Air Force One plane.

The Air Force One plane is currently being stored at Phoenix/Mesa Gateway Airport in Mesa, Ariz. It's a DC9-32, with tail number N681AL. The site notes that inspections of the site are "by appointment only" and that bidders are responsible for removing the plane. The ad warns that "successful bidders are cautioned that they will be responsible for loading, packing and removal of any and all property awarded to them from the exact place where the property is located."

Still, it might just be a tempting offer for someone with the funds to own a piece of history.
