McDonald's Adding Three New Quarter Pounders To Menu, Phasing Out Angus Burger [VIDEO]

McDonald's is adding three new Quarter Pounders to its menu as the fast-food chain looks to offer cheaper premium burgers.

The Quarter Pounders will be replacing the Angus Burgers at McDonald's. They will come in two of the same varieties as the Angus; Bacon and Cheese, and Deluxe. The third option will be Habanero Ranch. They will also be swapping the bun to a more healthy whole grain variation, and the bacon will go from hickory smoked to apple wood.

The new Quarter Pounders were tested at restaurants in Sacramento, Calif., and Toledo, Ohio, over the past nine months.

"Once we created these burgers, we didn't see the need for the Angus line," A McDonald's rep said.

McDonald's Angus Burger will soon be cut out of their menu, after 4 years being sold at the burger chain, being replaced with the new Quarter Pounder varieties that will hit the McDonalds menu mid-June.

The Angus burger, which was introduced in 2009, is among the chain's priciest items. Sales were not keeping up with the high beef prices and were scaring away their loyal customers that come into the fast-food chain for a deal.

McDonalds customers were not purchasing the Angus burger because they're priorities lye in buying a cheap meal; not getting a quality sandwich.

The Dollar Menu has also made the Angus burger a less attractive option at around $4 to $5. "When you can get four or five burgers off the Dollar Menu, nobody's going to buy the Angus burger," a consultant of McDonalds said. "The Dollar Menu has become a real problem for these chains."

At a time when the restaurant industry is barely growing, McDonald's has been playing up its Dollar Menu in ads to boost sales and steal customers away from competitors. Even if that hurts profit margins, executives say the strategy is critical to gaining market share and

The burger chain is also cutting their unpopular Chicken Selects and Fruit & Walnut Salad. The higher quality items were not compatible to the McDonalds money saving menu.

McDonald's also hinted at adding other surprises on their menu. My guess is it's something lower in calories, and maybe even vegetarian, to keep up with the shifting changing in tastes of 20 and 30-year-olds.

In order to lighten up their menu, McDonalds did add Egg McMuffins on whole grain brain and made with egg whites, and a chicken McWrap.  McDonald's calls these healthier choices "Subway Busters" because they deter people from going to their competitor, "Subway."

Greg Watson, Senior Vice President of menu innovation at McDonald's USA, said the quarter pounder hadn't been "tinkered" much since it's inclusion to the menu in 1971, and the company has seen huge growth when reintroducing an already known product such as chicken nuggets and the Big Mac.
