Kermit Gosnell, Abortion Doctor Found Guilty On First-Degree Murder

A Philadelphia jury found abortion doctor, Kermit Gosnell, guilty on three of four counts of first-degree murder, NBC News reports.

Gosnell, a longtime abortion provider, was accused of killing four babies and one female patient, amongst other charges that was filed against him. He was, however, acquitted in the fourth baby’s death.

The jury reached the verdict Monday after initially splitting on two of the over 200 counts in the case against the supposedly legal abortion doctor, which includes racketeering and conspiracy charges. Some charges against Gosnell include abortion law violations.

The jury will return Tuesday to hear evidence on whether Gosnell should get the death penalty or not.

Former clinic employees testified that Gosnell routinely performed illegal late-term abortions, which is beyond Pennsylvania’s 24-week limit. He has also delivered babies that are still moving, whimpering or breathing, and that the abortion doctor and his assistants “snipped” the newborns’ spines, as he referred to the practice.

Prosecutor Ed Cameron snarled, “Are you human?” during the closing arguments while Gosnell sat calmly at the defense table. “To med these women up and stick knives in the backs of babies?”

The gory details came out more than two years ago during an investigation of prescription drug trafficking at Gosnell’s clinic, which is located at an impoverished section of West Philadelphia.

Authorities said the clinic was a foul-smelling “house of horrors” with bags and bottles of stored fetuses, including jars of severed feet, along with bloodstained furniture, dirty medical instruments, and a number of cats roaming the premises.

Pennsylvania law officials had failed to conduct routine inspections of all of its abortion clinics for 15 years by the time Gosnell’s facility was raided and closed. The scandals aftermath has resulted to two top state officials being fired and Pennsylvania imposing tougher rules for abortion clinics.

Four former clinic employees have pleaded guilty to murder and four more to other charges, according to reports and court documents. Gosnell’s wife, Pearl, a cosmetologist, were one of those who pleaded guilty. She helped perform abortions at the clinic.

Both sides of the abortion divide seized on the Gosnell case. Pro-life advocates said it exposed the true nature of abortion in all its disturbing detail; labeling the practice as murder at the end of the day. Pro-abortion camps, however, argued that Gosnell’s rogue practice foreshadows what poor and desperate young women could face if abortion is driven underground and with more restrictive laws.

Midway through the six-week trial, pro-life advocates has accused the mainstream media of ignoring the case because it reflected badly on the abortion rights cause. Major news organization denied the allegation, though a number promptly sent reporters to cover the trial.

Kurt Gosnell has performed thousands of abortions over his 30-year career, which according to authorities nets him $1.8 million a year, most of it in cash. Authorities discovered a $250,000 stash of cash hidden in his bedroom when they searched his house. The abortion doctor also owned a beach home and several rental properties.
