Paris Soccer Fans Riot After a Victory by David Beckham’s Paris St. Germain Team

According to published reports, hundreds of fans of David Beckham’s new soccer team, Paris St. Germain, turned a victory celebration into a riot that spilled onto the streets of Paris. At least 30 people were injured in the Paris riots, including three police officers, during the fight. Authorities arrested 21 people. 800 policemen were called to the scene and it took them several hours to bring the situation under control.

The riot broke off from a celebratory parade that was happening near the Arc of Triumph. Reports said that protesters lifted the Paris St. Germain trophy a few minutes before fighting broke out. The rioters began looting stores and burning cars. Police showed up at the riot scene with tear gas.

Restaurants and other establishments shut their doors for the night after the rampage started. The riot forced the cancellation of the remainder of the celebrations that were planned, including speeches from the coach Carlo Ancelotti and Captain Thiago Silva and the planned tour of the Seine River. Security officers led players to safety after the breakout.

A photographer on the scene said "The Champs Elysee is a battlefield. There are youths smashing shop windows and stealing everything they can. They are also attacking cars and motorbikes."

Paris St. Germaine is one of the richest soccer clubs in the world, but the team has never been able to "shake off its hooligan following."

After the riot, Paris St. Germain issued a statement saying, “The party was spoiled by a few hundred troublemakers who have nothing to do with football and even less with those that fill the Parc des Princes on match days with such passion and enthusiasm and in total security. All the members of the club, the players and the directors, express to all those loyal and passionate fans their heartfelt regret that today’s trophy presentation ceremony had to be cut short.”

Monday’s victory was the first time in 19 years that the Paris St. Germain won a championship trophy.
