Man Who Fled Zombies in a Stolen Truck Pleads Guilty

The Zombie Apocalypse is tough on traffic. According to published reports, a man who told police he stole an 18-wheeler strawberry truck to get away from zombies has pleaded guilty to several felonies, including assault with a deadly weapon, hit-and-run causing death or injury, and vehicle theft. Seven people were injured, three of them seriously. Under a plea agreement with the Riverside County court, the state said it would dismiss four other charges, including reckless driving. The man faces up to five years in prison.

On April 16, Jerimiah Clyde Hartline, 29, from Tennessee, hid in the truck during its cross-country trek to California. At about 6 p.m., he took the wheel of a big-rig when the driver stopped at a roadside scales checkpoint just outside Temecula, Calif., to sign some paperwork.

The California Highway Patrol says Hartline caused several crashes as he swerved all over Interstate 15, performing evasive maneuvers to avoid zombies. The man did not know how to drive the heavily loaded truck. The truck jackknifed, spilling some of the cargo of strawberries and blocking all four traffic lanes. The remaining load of undamaged strawberries was donated to nonprofit organizations and local food pantries after the crash.

Hartline told California Highway Patrol investigators that he had to speed and swerve because he was fleeing from zombies. It unclear whether Hartline was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the accident. There are also no reports on whether he tried to use his zombie defense in court.

Hartline is scheduled to be sentenced on June 24. Without the plea agreement, he would face a 12 year, four month sentence.
