Leonardo DiCaprio’s Charity Auction For Environmental Protection Raises $38 Million

Leonardo DiCaprio's latest hit doesn't have anything to do with his newest film - The Great Gatsby. DiCaprio's charity auction raised $38.8 million to benefit environmental and conservation programs. The charity auction, which took place on Monday, included initiatives to protect wildlife and endangered species, causes Leonardo DiCaprio has worked hard to promote in the past.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Christie's in New York City joined forces for the 11th Hour Auction. The auction far surpassed its goal of $18 million.

The charity auction featured modern works of art by Robert Longo, Elizabeth Peyton and Carol Bove. All 33 works up for auction were sold; nine of them were bought for over a million dollars each.

Some of the biggest sellers included Mark Grotjahn's "Untitled," which sold for $6.5 million, and Zeng Fanzhi's "The Tiger," which sold for $5 million.

One donor pledged to match the sales on three tiger paintings, whose profits were earmarked specifically to protect tigers in the wild. The donor paid $5 million. Christie's Brett Gorvy called the auction, "the most important environmental charity ever staged."

DiCaprio donated Andreas Gursky's "Ocean V" from his own art collection.

"Despite the significant efforts of organizations and individuals all over the world, our modern way of life has caused unprecedented devastation to our oceans, our forests and our wildlife," DiCaprio announced.

The Gatsby actor continued, "Each of these natural systems is critical to our way of life: They provide us with the food that we eat, the air that we breathe, and the natural resources we need to survive. The time to protect them is long overdue. I am very grateful to Christie's, Loic Gouzer and the artists who contributed great works of art for making this auction possible."

The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, whose mission is to protect wildlife by preserving habitats, will allocate the proceeds from the auction.  Thus far, the Foundation has worked to protect rainforests in Sumatra, endangered sharks, and tigers in Nepal, according to The Daily Beast.

Some stars in attendance, in addition to DiCaprio, were Bradley Cooper, Mark Ruffalo, Salma Hayek, and DiCaprio's Gatsby co-star and friend Tobey Maguire.
