O.J. Simpson Granted One Hand Free In New Trial For Robbery Case

Simpson granted one hand free, a small victory. O.J. Simpson was granted the ability to have one hand unshackled to drink water and take notes.  Simpson smiled and waved with his shackled hand at friends and family members as he came into the courtroom.

Clark County District Court Judge Linda Marie Bell said Simpson could have one hand free on day 2 of the Las Vegas hearings in which Simpson is attempting to win a new trial for his robbery case. Simpson, the former football superstar, TV personality, and infamously-acquitted alleged murderer wants a new trial for his robbery case. His lawyers are claiming that his trial lawyer, Yale Galanter, had conflicted interest and gave such bad advice that the old ruling should be thrown out and Simpson should have a new trial.

Gabriel Grasso, former co-counsel and friend of Yale Galanter, testified again about Galatner's conduct during the 2008 trial.

Simpson will still have his left hand cuffed to his chair. Simpson, 65, is serving a prison term of 9 to 33 years for being the ringleader, with five other men, in a 2007 armed robbery of sports memorabilia dealers that took place in a hotel room.

Galanter's former friend and co-counsel, Gabriel Grasso, returned to the stand on Tuesday with criticism about Galanter's promises and performance during the 2008 trial and conviction and later appeal.

"I could advise O.J. all day long, and he was very respectful of me," Grasso said. "But if I advised him of something different from what Yale said, he would do what Yale said."

Grasso testified that Galatner decided not to have Simpson testify during that trial. "Mr. Galanter told him, 'This is the way it's going to be,'" Grasso said on the stand.

"I didn't think him not testifying was sound advice," he said later.

Grasso also testified that Galanter took money for himself, didn't pay Grasso, and, in addition, refused to pay for specialists to examine crucial audio recordings that ultimately contributed to Simpson's conviction.
