Jaden Smith Seeks Emancipation From Parents, Will Smith Jada Pinkett Smith, So 'He Can Have His Own Place' [Video]

Jaden Smith wants to be emancipated from his famous parents, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. The 14-year-old Jaden Smith stars with is dad in the upcoming film, "After Earth," where he plays the son to Smith's character as his father, but in real life Jaden Smith wants be emancipated for his 15th birthday.

Jaden Smith's drive to be legally emancipated from his famous parents, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, came as Will Smith was doing press for the upcoming M. Night Shyalmalen After Earth, where he stars with his 14-year-old son, Jaden. The film is set to hit theaters in the U.S. on Mary 31, and the two are doing press for the film all over Europe and Asia, where it's already premiered.

Will told the UK's The Sun about his son Jaden Smith's plans for emancipation:

"He says, 'Dad, I want to be emancipated.' I know if we do this, he can be an emancipated minor, because he really wants to have his own place, like ooh."

"That's the backlash. On the other side, if kids just want to have command of their lives, I understand."

Jaden first appeared in a film with his father in 2006 with The Pursuit of Happyness, but he's since appeared in The Day Earth Stood Still with Keanu Reeves and the reboot of the classic Karate Kid franchise with Jackie Chan, and which is famous father produced.

Their newest film has Jaden playing Kitai Raige, and he has to help his injured dad, Cypher, played by his real-life day, Will Smith, after they fall to earth 1000 years from now.

Will talked about Jaden getting out from under his shadow despite not yet being legally able to drive in the U.S. and the similarities between the movie and real life:

"It's very similar for Jaden and me - your father's the biggest movie star in the world, and you're struggling for your little piece of dignity in this extreme shadow."

As for parenting, Will and Jada Pinkett Smith are supporting Jaden's plan for emancipation as a 15th birthday present because they don't believe in punishing their children. Says Will Smith:

"We generally don't believe in punishment. From the time Jaden was five or six we would sit him down, and all he has to do is be able to explain why what he did was the right thing for his life.

"I think it's a much more difficult question to ask someone - 'Why was that right?' - than to try to show them why it was wrong.

"Nobody wants to be wrong, all parts of yourself fight like crazy to not be wrong. So I'll say to Jaden, 'Why was that the right thing to do for your life?' and if he can explain why kicking his sister in the chest was the right thing to do, we can see to it that he understands that it wasn't so smart."

We're not exactly sure why Jaden Smith wants to become emancipated, besides getting his own place because his parents certainly aren't doing anything he can complain about.
