Elderly Amputee Killed by Dogs In South Carolina

Authorities said an elderly double amputee in South Carolina who was attacked by four dogs that pulled him from his motorized wheelchair, died from his injuries on Sunday night. Major John Garrison of the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Department said Carlton Freeman, 80, of Harleyville, S.C., was driving his wheelchair on May 8 when the dogs attacked him. In the incident report, Freeman told police that the dogs were biting him and pulling on his clothes. Freeman had both of his legs amputated at the knee after an injury years ago.

Coroner Chris Nesbit said “Upon my examination of Mr. Freeman, it is a wonder that this gentleman was able to hang on as long as he did. He had bites and lacerations from his legs to the top of his head. This is very sad story, but even worse that Mr. Freeman was basically helpless to the attack, due to being a bi-lateral amputee.”

Major Garrison said that the police set traps to catch the dogs. Three of the dogs have been captured by police and were taken to an animal shelter. Deputies are still looking for the fourth dog. The police report says three of the dogs belonged to a neighborhood woman. The police found traces of blood on the dogs.

No arrests have been made.

This is the country’s second fatal dog mauling in the past year. A two-month old child was killed and dismembered by the family’s dog in April 2012 while his father was asleep in another room. The child had been sitting in a baby swing.
