17 puppies were dumped along the side of a road in Porter, Indiana. The Porter County Sherriff's Department still hasn't identified the culprit.

Karen Read discovered the 17 dumped puppies and their mother on Friday night. Read was driving when she noticed a set of eyes in the road. At first she thought it was a raccoon.

"Then I saw a mother dog, and countless puppies," she told a local paper. She saw someone in a gold SUV dump a mother dog and nine tiny puppies along the road. As Reid came up, the person in the SUV peeled off rapidly.

Read yelled for her husband to come help. The puppies ran off, down the road, into creeks and ditches, and into the road. Read and her husband gathered up the puppies. Then they found eight more puppies running along the road, Waverly Road.

Read called police and waited for help to arrive. When the  Porter County Animal Control came, they were able to take 15 of the 17 puppies Read found to the Porter County Animal Shelter.

They weren't able to catch the mother dog at the time.  The mother dog was a black, medium-sized dog with a white patch under her chin. Thankfully, she was captured Monday afternoon in a live trap and taken to the animal shelter. Porter County Animal Control confirmed that she was at the shelter.

"I'm glad I came when I did," she said. "We have coyotes, raccoons and possums out there. They'd be killed."

Two of the puppies were taken by someone else; they appeared to be ill. The local resident turned the puppies in to the Porter County Animal Shelter the next day, Saturday.

The pups are now in the hands of a local foster organization, Lakeshore PAWS. The puppies seem to be from two separate litters, but no word as to why someone had all 17, or why they may have been dumped in two different loads.

Read isn't sure who was in the gold SUV- she didn't get a close look at them.  Investigators are looking for leads on the story. The puppies will be ready for adoption soon.
