International Football Star David Beckham To Retire at End of Season

Sports superstar David Beckham announced today, May 16th, that he shall be retiring from football after this season.

David Beckham's decision to retire comes days after he one his latest title with French club Paris Saint-Germain, according to CNN.

"I'm thankful to PSG for giving me the opportunity to continue but I feel now is the right time to finish my career, playing at the highest level," Beckham said in a statement.

David Beckham has been playing professional football since 1992, when he joined Manchester United at the age of 17.

David Beckham made his England debut in 1996, at the age of 21. He was captain for six years, which he played 58 times and made 115 appearances for England's national team.

"If you had told me as a young boy I would have played for and won trophies with my boyhood club Manchester United, proudly captained and played for my country over one hundred times and lined up for some of the biggest clubs in the world, I would have told you it was a fantasy," said Beckham in a statement according to CNN.

David Beckham has played for Manchester United, Los Angeles Galaxy Preston, North End, Milan, Real Madrid, French Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain, and the England national team.

Beckham is married to former Spice Girl pop star, Victoria Beckham. The couple has four children, and their presence within the fashion world has made both of them international stars.

Beckham had started planning for his post-playing career earlier in the season, becoming an ambassador for Chinese soccer according to the Associated Press.

"Nothing will ever completely replace playing the game I love, however I feel like I'm starting a new adventure and I'm genuinely excited about what lies ahead," Beckham said. "I'm fortunate to have been given many opportunities throughout my career and now I feel it's my time to give back."
