Latest updates reveal that Michelle Lee addressed issues associated with the hardships she encountered in her lifetime because of her skin color. According to reports, Michelle Lee was invited as a guest on "Hello," where a man from Nigeria came onto the show to break stereotypes.
Allkpop reported that the Nigerian revealed that although he has been living in Korea for nine years of his life now, he is still being tortured by stereotypes. The report state that the man added that he is being avoided by people who describe him as "scary." The man continued to say that he was informed that he would not be able to rent an apartment as Black people are dirty. But he added that he doesn't think that he is sorry and he is definitely not a bad person.
According to reports, Michelle Lee agreed with the Nigerian and added that she faced a similar discrimination when she was young. Michelle Lee said no one wanted to sit next to her on the bus and her friend's parent always caution their children not to touch her as she was dirty, Onehallyu reported.
She concluded with an inspiration for the man saying that the only reason why she was able to overcome all that hardship and discrimination was because there were people who loved and cared for her. She asked him to live for them and it will make him happier.
Michelle Lee is a South Korean singer born September 9, 1991 in Paju, South Korea, to a Korean mother and African American father. She grew up in Paju with her sister and mother, as her father returned to the United States before she was born following her parents' separation. It is being reported that the singer does not know her father.
However, just like her fellow Black-Korean musicians like Insooni and Yoon Mi-rae, Michelle Lee encountered never ending discrimination for her biracial identity in school. The debut of Michelle Lee's single titled "Without You" centers on the bullying and discrimination the singer suffered.
Michelle Lee auditioned successfully for K-pop Star Season 1 in 2011 and was eventually signed to YG Entertainment as part of a new girl group popularly known as SuPearls. Unfortunately, the group was disbanded before they could even debut, after two years of training, leading to the nullification of Michelle Lee's contract.
Michelle Lee is currently signed to DIMA Entertainment, the affiliate agency of the Dong-Ah Institute of Media and Arts. Michelle Lee admits that she has never left the South Korean soil and that she occasionally struggles with English.
