Hofstra University Shooting Leaves Two Dead: 21-Year-Old Twin Sorority Girl Dies As Her Twin Was Held Hostage

Hofstra University shooting leaves two dead off campus, which includes a 21-year-old sorority member and the alleged gunman.

The victim is being identified by friends as Andrea Rebello, when the Hofstra University shooting leaves two dead at her home in Uniondale, N.Y. on Long Island. She was with two other girls - including her twin sister Jessica - and a male when the alleged intruder forced his way into the home at 2.30am on Friday, according to police.

The Hofstra University shooting leaves two dead when Rebello's sister was held hostage, according to the authorities. The gunman allowed one woman to go free eventually and she immediately called the police, who then arrived in which a shootout ensued.

She told the 911 dispatcher that the intruder had a silver handgun pointed at her friend's head in a second-floor bedroom, NBC reported. She added that there were multiple hostages.

"We don't know [the suspect's] motive at this time but it appears to be a robbery," Chief Rick Capece said in a press conference on Friday.

Andrea Rebello was a junior at Hofstra studying Public Relations and Sociology and grew up in Westchester, New York, according to her blog.

"I'm 100% Portuguese and have an identical twin sister so I guess that makes me kind of unique?" she wrote in the bio.

One of the victim's friends told NBC that she was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority and lived with six of her sorority sisters at the home. The gunman is believed to be from Brooklyn.

Victoria Dehel, who lives four houses away, said she had heard what sounded like fighting coming from the home. She ignored it as first, believing it was rowdy students coming home from a bar.

"It didn't sound good at all," Dehel said. "I turned to my boyfriend and I said, I think someone just got murdered. It was awful."

Another nearby neighbor said, "I came home last night ten minutes before it happened and I heard screams. I ran outside and police officers were like, 'go back inside your house, go back inside your house.'"

The case is still being investigated and no reason for the actions was given.

"A young member of the Hofstra family has been taken from us in a senseless act of violence," Hofstra University President Stuart Rabinowitz said in a statement. "Our hearts and minds and our thoughts and prayers are with her family, her friends and her classmates."

Rabinowitz also said that graduation commencement will go on as scheduled.
