Waitress Gets Huge Tip-- $446 On $6 Bill-- From Customer At 'Steak And Shake'

A waitress at a Steak and Shake restaurant in Indiana got a huge tip-- $446 on a $6 bill. CeCe Bruce, the waitress, got the big tip from a regular customer.

Bruce says she's always known that it paid to be nice - but it's never paid off the way it just did for the Steak and Shake waitress. Bruce has worked at the Indianapolis area Steak and Shake for two years. She's also a part-time student at Martin University, so the $466 tip will be a big help for her.

Bruce said, "I was having a hard time at another table, but kept smiling and going on." Her smiles paid off.

While working, she's gotten a few generous tips, but nothing like the $446 on $6 she received from a regular known as Miss Jo. When Bruce picked up the credit card receipt, she thought it was $46-which would be shocking enough, considering that the bill was $5.97. But the actual tip was $446.

"At first I thought, '$46?" And I said, 'Miss Jo, that's really generous." Then she realized the actual number that Miss Jo had left on the tip line.

"When I looked again, I said 'Oh my gosh, Miss Jo, I'm not taking that!' And she said, 'Yes, you're taking it,' Bruce told a local news station.

"I didn't think I was worth $400 but, you know, she feels I am," Bruce said.

Bruce's manager praised her, too. Greer Gooley said she's worth it.

"She stays late, comes in early. Whenever we need her, she's here. So she deserves it more than anyone," Gooley told a local TV station. "It just lets servers know that you work hard and it does pay off. There are people out there that [if] you do your job people reward you for it."

Miss Jo's generosity will be remembered by Bruce, who plans to use the $446 she received on the $6 bill to pay bills of her own.
