Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka Advance To Rome Finals; Azarenka Won Their Only Match Earlier This Year

Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka have advanced to the finals of the WTA event in Rome after easy straight set victories during the semifinal matches on Saturday. Williams defeated Simona Halep of Romania 6-3, 6-0, while Azarenka defeated Sara Errani of Italy 6-0, 7-5. The world No. 3 Azarenka won her most recent match against Williams in Doha, but Williams leads their head-to-head 11-1. The pair have played one match on clay last year in Madrid, but this will be their first meeting on red clay.

Williams stormed through the final nine games of the match against Halep, who was having the biggest week of her career after coming through qualifying. She hit a winner on her first match point and wrapped up the match in just over an hour. Williams has won both clay court tournaments she has competed in so far this year at Charleston and Madrid.

Azarenka raced out to a 4-0 lead against Errani before play was suspended for over an hour due to rain. Errani began to hit her shots with more pace after the delay and kept the second set competitive, but never truly challenged Azarenka in the match. Azarenka is only competing in her second clay court event of the year; she lost in the second round in Madrid last week.

Williams is currently on the biggest win streak of her career at 22 matches and has not last a match since Azarenka defeated her in Doha. Her only other loss came to American Sloane Stephens in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, but Williams was visibly injured during her match and posted photos of her swollen ankle afterwards on Twitter.

Both Azarenka and Williams will take next week off before competing in the French Open, which runs from May 26-June 9. Maria Sharapova is the defending champion in that event.
