How K-Pop Culture Became a Global Phenomenon

There is no doubt that K-pop, which is also known as Hallyu, is one of the most influential pop culture phenomenons of our time. And because of its unprecedented growth, it had easily entered different regions of the world.

Because of the boom of K-pop, Korean culture in general has grown into something more as it had made other nationalities love everything about Korean, and even Asian culture. There are already a lot of countries that have welcomed the K-pop culture.

However, one of the unlikeliest of places that have went all in for K-pop is Canada. According to Korea Portal, one of the things which prove that K-pop is very popular in Canada is that the University of Toronto has its own pool of Korean language classes.

What makes this very interesting news is that Kyoungrok Ko, an associate professor in the University of Toronto, confirms that K-pop is indeed changing the educational landscape of Canada. This is because statistics state that there were only 35 students who took Korean language class in 2010.

However, it went on a sudden skyrocketing boom as it increased to 175 students in 2016. As of now, there are even more than 200 students who are waiting in queue.

One student even claims that K-pop has a very big effect in her life, after she had discovered the K-pop group named BSK when she was still a child. Since then, she had grown fond in everything that is related to Korea, even the music, actors and actresses, and even the food cuisine. Her case is similar to thousands of Canadians and other nationalities around the world, a proof that K-pop is indeed very influential.

With this, the Vancouver Korean community is indeed improving and increasing its influence in Canada. It just proves that Korean, specifically K-pop culture, is definitely growing in influence in Canada and other western nations.
