Angry Mob Pelts Man With Rocks; Mob Thought Innocent Man Was Wanted Sexual Predator

Residents of Pueblo, Colorado pelted a man with rocks, believing him to be a sexual predator. The residents were looking for a man suspected of two sexual acts and found the pelted man, who matched the suspect's description.

One of the group members spotted the man and they confronted him. Angry that police had not warned them about sexual assaults on children in their neighborhood, the group chased down the man, throwing rocks at his face.

The pursuers, made up of about half a dozen people, also surrounded him and punched him in the face, police Capt. Tom Rummel told the Associated Press. Police were able to grab hold of the man and drive him off in a police car. The 54-year-old was not seriously injured.

Alex Pacheco, one of the pursuers, said he and the other residents were canvassing the area in an attempt to find the man who committed the sex crimes in the last couple of months.

"We went through the right channels in contacting the police but there hasn't been much response," Pacheco said. "We can't wait around any longer without doing something. These are children that this man is after and we can't let any more children get hurt by him."

Rummel said police are not required to notify residents if no one has been arrested for such charges. He did say that police had used social media to post warnings about the attacks in the neighborhood. Rummel added the police only had a vague description of the suspect because he wore a bandana over his face.

The suspect is accused of two incidents in the area. One involves the sexual assault of a girl in her home, and the other of exposure of himself to another child.
