Christian Bale was unrecognizable at LAX, where he was spotted on Sunday, May 19.

Actors and actresses often change their physiques for certain roles. Immediately, one's mind jumps to Renee Zellweger in her famous role in Bridget Jones's Diary. Equally as easy to recall is Christian Bale. Batman no more, Christian Bale's new physique looks more like that of a trucker than a Hollywood heartthrob. Alongside his wife and daughter, he was seen leaving LAX, almost unrecognizable.

The Dark Knight Rises star has packed on more than a few pounds for his role in an untitled David O. Russell film, where he plays con man-turned-FBI worker Melvin Weinberg. Bale is nearly unrecognizable with his new look. 

Photos from the set that debuted this week showed Bale, 39, sporting a greasy comb-over, some classic '70s aviator glasses and, most frighteningly, a beer gut, or at least what looks like one. Of course, this isn't the first time Christian Bale has transformed his body for a role. He's famous for going to extreme measures to fit the part of his character. Though, this is the first time we've seen the Batman star put on weight.

In the past, Bale was either dropping weight at an unhealthy rate or hitting the gym to pack on muscle, making himself look like that of Hercules. Looking relaxed, yet dignified with his new weight, Bale must be happy eating with no calorie restrictions and sleeping in instead of heading to the gym.

The dedicated actor has undergone many dramatic transformations, making him unrecognizable to fans from film to film. For The Machinist in 2002, Bale lost 60 pounds. And while these yo-yo transformations may not be good for his body, they are definitely helpful in the crusade for an Oscar.

Jennifer Lawrence also underwent a nearly unrecognizable makeover for the movie by changing her hair. The debutante star was spotted with an elaborately coiffed blonde updo for her role as Bale's character's wife.

American Hustle will premiere in theaters on December 25, 2013.
