The force of the BTS ARMY is strong - so strong in fact that even Billboard Music Awards event president Mike Mahan was compelled to action. This time, no less than the BMA event president sent out the invite to the K-pop superstars to attend the awards ceremony on May 21.
According to a report by SBS Pop Asia, a member of ARMY, BTS' official fandom, tweeted Mike Mahan, the president of Dick Clark Production, which is in charge of the BMAs and asked whether BTS has officially been invited to the event. BTS is the only K-pop group to be nominated for Top Social Artist in this year's Billboard Music Awards.
Upon receiving the tweet, Mike Mahan personally confirmed that he has sent out the invites to BTS along with the other music superstars to attend the prestigious awards ceremony. BTS is pitted against Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande and Shawn Mendez for the Top Social Artist category, which is open for voting from the fans. Big Hit Entertainment may soon confirm thatRap Monster, Jimin, Jin, Suga, JHope, Jungkook, and V will be attending the awards ceremony especially since the ARMY has initiated a petition for the boys to grace the BMAs.
BTS' ARMY proved straight off the bat that they are setting out for a win as ARMYs from all over the world used the BTS hashtag for BMAs last May 1 on the first day of voting and trended the hashtag with 8 million tweets. The closest competition was Justin Bieber's Beliebers who managed to gather 400,000 tweets on the first day, Korea Portal reported.
Aside from excelling in the Billboard Music Awards, BTS has also been consistently maintained its lead on the Billboard Top 50 charts and now trails only Justin Bieber (161 weeks) and Taylor Swift (28 weeks) for the most number of weeks on the charts. BTS has been on the charts for 22 weeks, surpassing Miley Cyrus and Rihanna's 21-week streak on the charts. With their current standing, BTS is considered to be the best performing music group on the charts, smashing One Direction's eight-week record on the Billboard Top 50.
