Lizz Winstead Twitter Account Under Attack; 'Daily Show' Creator Apologizes For Insensitive Oklahoma Tornado Tweet

Lizz Winstead's Twitter account has come under attack after she made an insensitive tweet about the Oklahoma tornado that has killed 51 people.

Winstead, a co-creator of The Daily Show, used her Twitter account on Monday afternoon to joke that, "This tornado is in Oklahoma so clearly it has been ordered to target only conservatives."

Winstead's tweet was a reference to the scandal facing the IRS and the Obama administration, but her Twitter account was flooded with angry messages immediately after. Jon Stewart, the host of The Daily Show, has yet to publicly respond to the scandal along with the show's producers.

One Winstead Twitter follower wrote, "As an Oklahoman, I don't think this is something that would result in my continuing to follow you."

Winstead refused to apologize and tweeted back, "If it's not OK to YOU for me to combine news stories to point out hypocrisy AND im not making fun of victims u should Unfollow." However, Winstead took to Twitter later that evening and apologized for her remarks.

"Made a political joke. Twas before devastation revealed. In hindsight, had I understood, I would have refrained. Beyond sorry. #Letmehaveit," she tweeted. Winstead also tweeted information about how her Twitter followers could donate to the Red Cross.

"If any Oklahomans have a charity they would like to donate to, let me know I'll tweet it out," she wrote. Winstead's Twitter fanbase of nearly 76,000 followers has actually increased in the 24 hours since the tweet.

The Daily Show has been on the air since 1996 and Jon Stewart has been the show's host since 1999. It remains the highest rated program on Comedy Central.
