George Michael Hospitalized After M1 Accident; Was Pot a Factor?

British media have reported that the 49-year-old former Wham! front man, George Michael, fell out of a car he was travelling in on the M1 motorway just outside London during rush hour.

Singer George Michael is being kept in hospital for treatment after sustaining head injuries on the M1 in Hertfordshire, his spokeswoman said.

Michael, whose real name is Georgios Panayiotou, was a passenger in a Range Rover involved in an accident on Thursday at junction 6A, near St Albans. He was airlifted to a specialist trauma center in London where is supposedly making good progress.

Michael was found on the road by paramedics at the scene of the accident on Thursday afternoon. His spokeswoman said, "He did suffer a couple of bumps and bruises to the head and that's why they are keeping him in, to keep an eye on him."

"He is doing better. He is making good progress and is looking forward to getting out," she added.

An ambulance service spokesman confirmed the patient, a man in his 40s, was "fully conscious" throughout the incident. A Hertfordshire Police spokeswoman said officers were unaware of any damage to the Range Rover and confirmed no other vehicles were involved.

George Michael is an English musician, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and record producer who rose to fame in the 1980s when he formed the pop duo Wham! with his school friend, Andrew Ridgeley.

Michael has sold an estimated 100 million records over his career, but in the past few years has hit the headlines for his personal life more often than for his music.

In 1998 he was arrested in California for "engaging in a lewd act" in a public toilet. He has also had a number of run-ins with British police for possession of narcotics, and served time in jail for driving under the influence of pot.
