Cleveland Cavaliers Win the NBA Draft Lottery Tonight to Earn First Pick In the NBA June Draft

The Cleveland Cavaliers will pick first overall in the 2013 NBA draft on June 27 after winning the NBA draft lottery Tuesday in New York. This will be the third time in 11 years the Cavaliers pick first.

"It's huge for us," owner Dan Gilbert said immediately after the pick. "For us, it's about the city of Cleveland and giving them more hope as we build the franchise to the level we want to go to."

After losing the NBA's greatest player, LeBron James, to free agency, the franchise has been losing with consistency. Now, they have chance to get back in the game of competing for an NBA championship if they can parlay this upcoming number one pick into an impact player.

Kentucky freshman Nerlens Noel is considered the top choice, by most draft experts, though he could miss the first two months of the season while recovering from a torn ACL in his knee.

The Orlando Magic, which had the worst record in the NBA at 20-62, had been hoping to rebuild their roster after their terrible 2012-13 season, in which they were forced to trade their superstar, Dwight Howard. Instead, the Magic dropped from the No. 1 spot to No. 4 in the draft.

The lottery has supplanted the playoffs as Cleveland's offseason destination. The Cavaliers are in the lottery for the third straight year, a run that began when LeBron James packed his bags and headed for Miami

Cavs owner Gilbert, who also has a string of casinos throughout Ohio, had bee  hoping for a little luck when the pingpong balls dropped tonight. He got what he wanted.

The Cavs won the lottery in 2011 and used the No. 1 overall pick on point guard Kyrie Irving, who was named an All-Star this past season.

Cleveland has four of the top 33 picks - Nos. 19, 31 and 33 - in this year's draft and intend to add some talent and depth for coach Mike Brown, who Gilbert has brought back after firing him three years ago.

The draft is June 27 at Barclays Center, home of the Brooklyn Nets.
