Three of Korea's most popular and talented leading men will join forces to helm "Battleship Island," a film based on the massive prison break from Hashima Island, a forced labor camp. The film will be Song Joong Ki's first major project after the success of KBS' megahit "Descendants of the Sun" last year.
According to a report by Drama Beans, Song Joong Ki will be joined by veteran actor So Ji Sub and Hwang Jung Min. The report indicated that for the movie, So Ji Sub plays the role of a common street fighter who becomes one of the key characters in the escape.
Hwang Jung Min, for his part, plays the role of a musician and a dedicated father who, instead of heading for Japan, finds himself in Battleship Island instead. Song Joong Ki plays the role of a soldier who is sent to "Battleship Island" to protect a key figure in the rebellion and escape.
The film is based on the experience of over 400 Koreans who have been forced into labor for a coal mine controlled by the Japanese. The film revolves around the Koreans' attempt to escape the underground labor camp to freedom at the risk of their own lives.
"Battleship Island" is expected to become the next critically acclaimed film by Ryu Seung Wan who directed "Veteran" in 2015. The film's historical premise , as well as the inclusion of veteran actors in its roster seems to already be piquing the audience's interest about the film,.Kpopstarz reported
