A&E Cancels Intervention After 13 Seasons With Final 5 Episodes; "Duck Dynasty" The New Reality Hit Show For The Network Killing Addiction Show Ratings[VIDEO]

A&E cancels Intervention after 13 seasons and 243 addicts. The network announced Thursday that "Intervention," the long-running docuseries, will come to an end following the final five episodes after 13 seasons. The addiction show cancels after high rating for "Duck Dynasty."

The A&E show "Intervenion" was a groundbreaking inside look at the lives of addicts.  "Intervention" brought attention to the social, economic and environmental cost of drug addiction, alcohol abuse and compulsive behavior.

As A&E cancels "Intervention" executives look back on how much the show has brought to mainstream pop culture with its authenticity and thought provoking stories.

"As Intervention comes to an end, we're proud to have paved the way for such an original and groundbreaking series," said David McKillop, executive vp programming at A&E Network and Bio Channel. "We're honored to have been a part of the 243 interventions since its premiere in March of 2005, leading to the 156 individuals that are currently sober to this day."

During its run, "Intervention" earned two Emmy nominations for outstanding reality series, taking home the award in 2009, beating out Kathy Griffin's "My Life On The D List."

The show's termination comes a year after A&E cancels one of its former signature series, Dog the Bounty Hunter, after eight seasons.

The two shows could not compete with the network's docuseries Duck Dynasty, which in April topped American Idol with its record-breaking finale ratings. The season finale drew a record 9.6 million viewers and 5.5 million among adults 18-49.

An hour long Christmas special premiered on December 5, 2012 as the season 2 finale, and became (at the time) the most-watched A&E episode in the network's history.

The February 27, 2013 third season premiere tallied 8.6 million viewers, including five million in the adults 25-54 demographic and five million in adults 18-49 demographic, making the premiere at the time the most watched telecast in network history, beating the Season 2 finale.

The one-hour, third season finale, which aired on April 24, 2013, tallied 9.6 million viewers, with 5.6 million in the Adults 25-54 demographic and 5.5 million in the Adults 18-49 demographic, making it the highest rated telecast in A&E history.

A&E executives agree it is time to focus on the new reality series that is completely beating out "Intervention" in ratings and populatity.

For the "Intervention" conclusion addiction specialists Jeff VanVonderen, Candy Finnigan, Donna Chavous and Ken Seeley will all return. A&E said the last five episodes will feature what the cable network dubs its most "intense" and "gripping" stories yet. It willl include some of its most difficult cases as family and friends stage an intervention with the toughest addicts.

In a testament to his infiltration into pop culture, "Intervention" has been mocked numerous times in series such as "Saturday Night Live," "Funnyordie.com," "South Park," "30 Rock," "Tosh.O" and "True Blood."
