TWICE Returns Strong with a More Mature Music in New Track, ‘Fancy’

With a lot of comebacks happening in the K-pop world, girl group TWICE makes sure they stand out with their new track "Fancy."

Laced with engaging synths and electro-pop elements, the song features a more mature sonic style -- a departure from the cheery dance-pop hits they have previously released, like "Cheer Up," "Signal," and "Heart Shaker."

"Fancy" is a dynamic K-pop piece that follows the story of a lady confessing her love to a man she has been fantasizing about. It features lyrics embellished with a variety of metaphors describing the narrator's rather colorful romantic feelings.

Bringing the song's sultry vibe to its accompanying music video, all nine members of the JYP Entertainment-signed group are seen in stylish looks -- dancing under neon lights, and singing with CGI-assisted visual effects in the background.

The music video, which dropped no April 22, is TWICE's most viewed YouTube video in 24 hours. A day after its release, it has already garnered over 39.8 million views, surpassing the previous record of their last single, "Yes or Yes" which attracted 31.4 million views.

TWICE's newest offering -- their first for this year -- will serve as the carrier track of their seventh EP called "Fancy You." The effort is composed of six cuts that boast a stellar roster of songwriters and producers.

"Fancy" is co-penned by the songwriting duo Black Eyed Pilseung, who have previously worked with TWICE for the tracks "TT" and "Like Ooh-Ahh." "Girls Like Us," meanwhile, is a collaborative endeavor between MNEK and British pop sensation Charli XCX.

According to member Jihyo, "'Girls Like Us'" is a song for those who are dreaming and having a hard time."

"While working on the song, I thought a lot back to the time when I wondered if it was right for me to become a celebrity," she further said during a recent V Live broadcast.

Jihyo, along with fellow members Sana, Momo, and Chaeyoung, also took part in the songwriting process of their "Fancy You" EP.

During the showcase of their mini album held in Seoul's Yes24 Live Hall, Chaeyoung emphasized that their first offering for the year "will become a turning point" in their music career.

"[We] wanted to show the public that there's also this side to TWICE," she added.

TWICE, first formed in 2015, is composed of Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Momo, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, Chaeyoung, and Tzuyu. They are set to headline the "Fancy You" world tour this year, starting with Seoul on May 25 and 26. Their tour stops include Bangkok (June 15), Manila (June 29), Los Angeles (July 17), Mexico City (July 19), Newark (July 21), Chicago (July 23), Singapore (July 25), and Kuala Lumpur (August 17).
