The newest, but not that new, boy group of SM Entertainment is NCT and this stands for Neo Culture Technology, which debuted last 2016. Though they are already in the K-pop industry for quite a while now and having tours across different countries, most of the people still haven't fully understand the concept behind this group, especially when this consists of different sub-units that has their own style and members.
During January 16, SM's founder, Lee Soo-man, presented to the world at SM COEX Atrium the term "Neo Culture Technology", which means that it is a unique concept of boy group as it doesn't have limits with regards to the number of its members. Though having unlimited members may seem confusing, the agency cleared that these members will have their own respective sub-units, whichever concept he is more suitable, but is still under the group NCT.
Throughout the three years of guesting in different variety or talk shows, whether in South Korea or internationally, the hosts and audiences seem to be confused of NCT's concept and its sub-units, and there are also many people around the world that is experiencing the same struggle as them.
That's why this article will let you explain thoroughly the group's concept and the sub-units under it. Firstly is, of course, the first sub-unit of NCT to debut; on April 2016, SM Entertainment announced the first ever unit of the group-NCT U. The letter "U" stands for the word united, wherein the members of this group is flexible and dynamic, which means that whoever fits the concept of the song or album will be the one doing it.
The first unit of NCT, with Ten, Jaehyun, Doyoung, Taeyong, and Mark, released a single entitled "The 7th Sense" which received a lot of positive feedback because of its futuristic style of rap and vibe.
After having a successful debut for NCT U, SM already presented the second unit after 3 months and this is called the NCT 127. In this concept, the sub-group is Seoul-based, that's why the company affiliated the longitude of Seoul (127), and they will have to spread their music in different parts of the world. This group debuted with 7 members, namely Taeil, Taeyong, Yuta, Jaehyun, Winwin, Mark, and Haechan; but they currently added 3 more members that are Johnny, Jungwoo, and Doyoung.
Fans weren't contented with just two units; therefore, SM immediately released the third sub-unit which is called NCT Dream after a month. In this group, the concept of the songs are more on the youthful and dreamy side of some members like Mark, Renjun, Jeno, Haechan, Jaemin, Chenle, and Jisung.
However, the saddest part of being a fan of NCT Dream is that members will automatically graduate once they reached the age of 20 years old. It's just basically means that this sub-unit is just for the members who are just in their teenage years, but most of them were added to some existing units like NCT 127 and U.
Lastly and the most recent unit that debuted from NCT is the Chinese-based group, WayV. They debuted last May 9 with their first mini-album entitled "Take Off - The 1st Mini Album", which also received a lot of compliments just like the other units experienced.
Stanning NCT might be different from supporting other idol groups, but everything will be worth it once you've seen them win on comeback stages, music shows, and awards night; and you might wish for other unit to debut too!
