Just as impactful as the news of their engagement and marriage was, all eyes are once again on Korea's powerhouse couple - Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo - as they confirmed they are heading to splitsville.
Joong Ki announced through his lawyer that he has recently filed for divorce from his wife of nearly two years.
As translated by Soompi, lawyer Park Jae Hyun remarked: "Our law firm filed for divorce on behalf of Song Joong Ki at the Seoul Family Court on June 26. Additionally, we would like to convey Song Joong Ki's official statement."
Avidly referred to as the Song-Song couple, the two high-profile actors met during the set of the 2016 K-drama phenom, "Descendants of the Sun."
With their intense on-screen chemistry, many have speculated that they are dating in real life.
As they denied dating rumors, fans across the globe were shocked when they announced their engagement in July 2017. They're highly talked about wedding happened in October of the same year.
"I have begun the process of filing for divorce from Song Hye Kyo. But instead of denouncing one another and arguing who is to blame, I hope that the divorce process can be wrapped up smoothly," he said, further asking their fans' understanding.
In a statement released by her agency, Hye Kyo cited differences in personality as the reason behind their split.
"The reason [for the divorce] is their differences in personality. As the two were unable to overcome their differences, they were forced to come to this decision," the statement read.
Joong Ki has recently returned to the small screen with the Netflix-broadcasted "Arthdal Chronicles." According to a report from Korea Herald, the divorce news has affected the stocks of Studio Dragon - the production outfit behind the project - tallying shares 1.29 percent lower compared with the statistic the day before.
Despite this sudden news, the company clarified that "Arthdal Chronicles" will still air as scheduled.
Hye Kyo, on the other hand, last appeared on the drama "Encounter," co-starring Park Bo Gum.
Rumors about their divorce first surfaced earlier in February this year. Media outlets and tabloids said that people have started speculating about the split when Hye Kyo, four years Joong Ki's senior, had public appearances wherein she was not wearing her wedding ring.
