Hallyu stars YoonA and Jo Jung Suk’s first-ever movie team-up proved to be a huge hit!
According to the Korean Film Council, their disaster-comedy film “E.X.I.T.” topped the local box office on the week of its release. Taking over Disney’s 2019 version of “The Lion King,” the movie has already attracted over 2 million moviegoers in just four days after it hit theaters.
It has also smashed the opening-day records held by acclaimed blockbuster films, “Veteran” and “Extreme Job.” After “Parasite,” it also became the first Korean flick to lead box office sales for two consecutive days.
“E.X.I.T.” revolves around the story of Yong-nam (Jung Suk), a jobless man who meets a former club-mate in college named Eui-joo (YoonA). The male lead tries to save the girl -- who has previously friend-zoned him -- along with the other residents of a city that gets mysteriously enveloped by a poisonous gas. The film is directed by Lee Sang-geun.
In a special video, the lead stars of the film thanked fans by crooning the theme song of the movie. Before the brief performance began, Jong Suk delivered a message, “Because you expressed much love for our film, ‘E.X.I.T.’ has exceeded the 1 million-moviegoer mark.”
The video dropped before the news of their project hitting 2 million moviegoers was released.
In an interview with Top Star News, Jung Suk revealed that working with YoonA -- who first rose to fame as a Girls’ Generation member -- is an amazing experience, admitting that he is a fan of her girl group.
The veteran actor also praised her fellow lead star, especially when they filmed the action sequences.
“Though I had a lot of scenes that were tough to shoot, I am amazed at how YoonA handled the physically challenging scenes of the female character in the script… There was a lot of physical encounters when we were shooting, but I can say that she did a great job,” he remarked.
