'Fast & Furious 6' Races to a $120 Million Take for Memorial Day Weekend

“Fast & Furious 6” is racing to a $120 million Box Office finish for the Memorial Day weekend.

“Fast & Furious 6,” the latest in Universal’s hot car franchise had a $38 million U.S. debut on Friday to top the holiday weekend box office take.

Fast & Furious 6” is also revving up for a $150 million take from overseas popcorn sales. The movie’s pace car, “Hangover III,” is rounding the last turn with a $63 million take for the weeked after it pulled $15.5 million in its debut on Friday.

“Fast & Furious 6” is on its way to the $120 million domestic mark with an overall opening weekend box office is on track to top $300 million. This would leave the 2011 muscle car entry in the dust with a $276 million total. "Hangover II" beat it in the opening weekend with a $85 million in 2011. "Fast & Furious 6" debuted at No. 1 in 59 foreign markets with its $36 million take on Friday, easily beating $92.3 million "Fast Five" take it rolled up in 2011. This makes for the best-ever box office Friday for Universal Studios.

The final entry in Warner Brothers’ raunchy comedy franchise, "The Hangover Part III," which opened Thursday, should wind up at around $63 million for the long weekend. The weekend’s other big release, the animated family film "Epic" from Fox, debuted with $9.2 million on Friday and looks like it will hit around $43 million for the four day weekend. It came in just behind last week’s No. 1 movie, "Star Trek Into Darkness" from Paramount, which took in $10 million on Friday and looks like it will pull in about $48 million over the four-day weekend.

"Iron Man 3" from Disney pulled in $5.1 million on Friday and should earn about $26 million for the four days. That will bring it domestic total to $351 million, and its worldwide Box Office pull to over $1.1 billion. "The Great Gatsby" from Warner Bros. earned topped $100 million domestically on Thursday and had a $3.9 million Friday. “The Great Gatsby” is expected to earn $16.8 million total for the four-day weekend.

"Fast & Furious 6" played on 3,658 screens. "The Hangover Part III" was shown in 3,555 theaters CinemaScore gave both "Fast & Furious 6" and "Epic" a grade of "A" from first-night audiences. "Hangover III" got a "B."
