A picture was posted on Instagram of Jay-Z and Geno Smith together before an official announcement was made that Smith signed on to Jay-Z's sports management team, Roc Nation.

The alleged involvement of Jay-Z in Geno Smith's decision could be a violation of the "runner rule." This rule doesn't allow non-agents to help recruit athletes for agencies, NY Daily News reports.

According to The Examiner, Jay-Z is not an officially-certified agent of the NFLPA, meaning he cannot be directly involved with client recruitments.

Jay-Z's Roc Nation Sports agency has already signed several big-name stars to their roster, the Inquisitr reports. The NFL is now investigating Jay-Z's involvement in Geno Smith's decision to sign on to Roc Nation Sports.

Suspicions were also raised when John Thorton, Smith's advisor, said that he was present during meetings between Smith, Jay-Z, and Roc Nation Sports agent Kim Miale. Thorton says they discussed Geno Smith's future in the NFL, according to the Inquisitr.

"I was in those meetings and Jay-Z connected with [Smith] on many levels."

Thorton now takes back this statement, and claims he was misquoted.
