Chinese Boy Desecrates Egyptian Temple, Because “Ding Jinhao Was Here” Trumps Pharaohs

A 15-year-old Chinese boy has been caught after scrawling graffiti on a 3,500-year-old Egyptian temple.  He wrote in Mandarin characters "Ding Jinhao was here." In small mercies, using your name is a good way to get caught (and, hopefully, resoundingly punished). Ah, the juvenile criminal mind.

The graffiti damaged a bas relief at the Luxor Temple in Egypt, which is on the banks of the Nile near the Valley of the Kings. The temple was built by Amenhotep III in the 14th century B.C. and eventually finished by Ramses II. And obviously, Ding Jinhao's name was just as important and deserved to be immortalized forever - even if he was 3,485 years younger.

A photo taken by another tourist went viral, and most of China is really, really pissed at Ding Jinhao right now. The photo got more than 100,000 comments on Chinese social networking site Weibo.

After Weibo users identified the boy, his address was posted online. Reporters swarmed on his home in Nanjing and his school website was hacked.

His mom apologized for him (of course, Ding - send your mommy to do your dirty work).

"We want to apologize to the Egyptian people and to people who have paid attention to this case across China," she said. She said her son scrawled the graffiti years ago and has since cone to regret the act.

"The boy has known about it since Friday and cried all night. He has had to be moved around because reporters rushed to their house for interviews," a reporter familiar with the story said.

China's booming economy has sparked unprecedented global tourism for the country. Chinese Vice Premier Wang Yang  spoke earlier this month about the "uncivilized behavior" of some tourists that is giving China a bad reputation. Now, Ding Jinhao's act has made him a national symbol of the issue.

It's not the end of the world, though - or even of the mural. Egypt's ministry of antiquities said that they might be able to restore the damage the graffiti did to the temple wall.
