CL is currently being lauded by people who are also partaking in the movement to stop racism and violence, following the tragic death of a black man in Minneapolis under the hands and knee local cops.
Through her Instagram, the singer used her platform to convey her powerful message, both in English and Korean, to properly deliver her side on the movement. As of the moment, the said post is heart-ed by over 304k subscribers.
"The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" was the 1st album my father bought me. Beyonce's 'DANGEROUSLY IN LOVE' was the first CD I bought for myself. Janet Jackson taught me the power of movement of dance and expression," CL began.
In the following paragraphs, she also mentioned other iconic female black artists who inspired her in sundry ways, such as Missy Elliott ("Work It," "Get Ur Freak On," "Throw It Back"), who she claims as the reason why she's "obsessed" with video visuals, and Lil Kim ("Crush On You," "Big Momma Thang," "No Time"), who taught her to be dauntless in terms of fashion clothing and tell stories through the clothes she wears.
"Aaliyah is the reason why I still wear baggy pants and combat boots on stage. During the rare moments of me being in Korea, my friends saw me sing (but actually screaming) 'nonononoWAY' by Whitney Houston," the former 2NE1 leader added, and also referenced the hook lyric of Mary J. Blige's "No More Drama."
Further, CL shared that among the largest inspirations for 2NE1 were the two iconic 90s R&B trios, TLC and Destiny's Child. The singer added these women she had mentioned are just some of the ones who inspired her throughout her career.
CL then stated that, whether the industry movers acknowledge this fact or not, the K-pop realm is "all inspired by black culture." She urged K-pop fans to show their support and love they received from Black artists and to start educating themselves and heighten awareness to the people regarding this significant movement.
"I want to explain to all K-pop fans, fellow Asians, and non-Americans, who feel like they have little or no connection to what is happening, that we're all connected at the end of the day," CL wrote.
"And don't we, Asians living abroad, also face enough racism to the point where we are numb and sick of it?" She further asked before encouraging everyone to stand up as one during these times.
CL finished her message with hashtags #BlackLivesMatter and #solidarity.
Instantly, she got tons of praise and appreciation for her words and encouragement to stand against racism.
"CL really set the f**king bar by calling out racism amongst Asian communities abroad as well. It's something I hope other idols will think critically about from now on when they market overseas," tweets one netizen.
"I love her SO MUCH?? Beyond words, she's an intellectual! & she worded it so well which showed her genuine concern & understanding of this situation!!" according to one fan.
A lot of K-pop idols have expressed their stand the ongoing protest against racism. BTS and MONSTA X have earlier expressed their support to end racism and violence.
