Most K-Pop groups have a designated leader in the groups and are considered an mportant position.
Leaders have many responsibilities, like being the bridge between the group members and the company and doing most of the talking in interviews and speeches. However, some K-Pop groups opt out of having leaders.
Here are nine groups who have chosen to debut without a leader.
1. KARD
KARD made waves as the first co-ed K-Pop group to hit the mainstream market. The group debuted without a leader, with some saying it's most likely that all members have leadership qualities in them, so having one member be the designated leader would be unnecessary.
2. BLACKPINK
BLACKPINK shocked fans after revealing that they did not have a leader within the four of them. Since they all trained for multiple years and formed such a close bond, they opted out of choosing a member to be a leader, saying that they were all too close to do so.
3. 2PM
Though they don't have a leader now, they used to. When they first debuted, former member Jay Park was the leader. Following controversial comments he made pre-debut being found by netizens, he left the group. 2PM never appointed someone to take over the leader position.
4. JYJ
JYJ consists of the former members ot TVXQ, who left the group and SM Entertainment following legal disputes. Debuting as a trio, they never appointed a leader when they debuted. JYJ is now a duo, with Park Yoochun leaving the group following his drug scandal.
5. AKMU
The brother-sister duo AKMU does not have a leader. Some speculate that it might be because they are family and find it awkward to select a leader between the two when they already have an oppa-dongsaeng relationship.
6. Secret Number
Secret Number, who just debuted this 2020, shocked fans when they announced that they didn't have a leader in the group.
7. iKON
When iKON debuted, they did have a leader, just like 2PM. Their former leader was B.I, but he left the group and company in 2019 following his drug scandal. Like 2PM, the remaining members did not appoint a new member to replace his spot.
8. Miss A
Miss A made waves as they were one of the first groups to debut without a leader. The girls say they chose to not have a leader since they have such a close bond with each other and see each other as friends.
9. Wooseok X Kuanlin
Despite Wooseok being older and being Kuanlin's sunbae (as he debuted with Pentagon in 2016 and Kuanlin debuted in 2017), the duo opted to not appoint an official leader.
