Some K-Pop groups get their tracks from in-house producers, some outsource their music, while others sample works from demos. Other group's, however, have members in their groups who not only sing, rap, and/or dance, they also compose, write the lyrics, and produce their tracks!
Here are the top four idol composer and lyricists of the third generation according to Korean netizens:
1. SEVENTEEN's Woozi
SEVENTEEN's Woozi has been composing and writing lyrics for SEVENTEEN songs ever since debut. In fact, the idol has produced over 80% of SEVENTEEN's songs and does all the vocal direction during the recording. On top of that, he composed, wrote the lyrics of, and produced I.O.I's goodbye song and final track, "Downpour," which received overwhelming support and praise due to how emotional the lyrics are.
In 2018, he revealed that over 60 songs are copyrighted under his name. It's been two years since he said that, so who knows how many is under his name now?
2. PENTAGON's Hui
Like Woozi, PENTAGON's Hui has also worked on tracks for his group, and he has been credited to have composed and written music for PENTAGON since debut. He actually composed, wrote the lyrics of, and produced their hit song "Shine," which boosted them to the mainstream market. He has also done songs for Triple H, Wanna One, Kriesha Chu, BVNDIT, Ong Seong Wu, and VAV. He also has some solo work under his name. Currently, he is in charge of the tracks performed by PENTAGON on Mnet's "Road to Kingdom."
Some of the songs that boosted Hui's name in the music industry include "Never," which was featured on Produce 101 and charted well on music charts, and "Energetic," the debut track of Wanna One.
He currently has 54 songs copyrighted under his name.
3. N.Flying's Lee Seunghyub
Lee Seunghyub produced N.Flying's hit track "Rooftop," the song that got them their first music show win and won "Dicovery of the Year - Band" on the 2020 Gaon Chart Music Awards. The song aso won "Best Rock" in 2019 Melon Music Awards.
He also produced the comeback after that, "GOOD BAM," also known as "Good Night." Aditionally, Lee Seunghyub has shared his composed music online through his Soundcloud under the name J.Don. His mixtapes can be found there.
4. (G)I-DLE's Soyeon
Soyeon first showed her composing and writing ability when she competed on Unpretty Rapstar 3, with her writing all the lyrics of the song herself. When she debuted as a soloist, she was credited for the music and the lyrics for her songs "Jelly," "Idle Song," and "The Loveless." In 2017, she produced JBJ's "Say My Name." In 2019, she wrote the lyrics to Lee Min Hyuk's "You Too? Me Too!" and Key's "I Wanna Be." That same year, she wrote and composed CLC's "No."
Like the first two composers mentioned, Soyeon has been producing tracks for her group since debut. In fact, she has been worked on every title track the group has had. She also helped with the tracks they performed on Mnet's "Queendom."
