It takes a bunch of luck to surpass the stumble blocks of success.
A 7-year curse is a belief that a lot follows, as the superstition suggests that the seventh year is a crucial year where misfortunes happen. This is why fans fear that these K-pop groups that are on their 7th year in the business will end up plunging to bad luck.
Are these K-pop groups succumbing to the 7-year curse this year? Let's see how netizens reacted.
GOT7
Recently, Ahgases trended the hashtag #JYPEjerk to show their disappointment with the septet's agency over accusations of mistreatment. GOT7 debuted in January of 2014, therefore, months from now, they will enter their 7th debut anniversary.
Some netizens believe that due to the boys' alleged lack of promotions, the band will sooner or later disband. "They probably already decided to disband and are waiting for the right time to let us know," one netizen commented. However, all of these stories are still rumors.
LOVELYZ
Although LOVELYZ's comeback is right at the corner, some netizens feel that the K-pop girl group has to fight the 7-year curse this year. Although their seventh year is still over 365 days, some are fearing that if their comeback would not succeed, chances are, struggles might come up.
"Lovelyz, I feel a 50/50. It will all depends on this upcoming comeback honestly. How will it turn out may affect the company's plans for them in the future and the morale of each member to continue under them. So I'll not expect much but here's hoping they will continue for some more time," said one netizen.
Laboum
Part of the list of K-pop groups that are feared to undergo the 7-year curse is Laboum. Although the group is packed with great concepts, netizens sense that there is a possibility of disbandment.
"Among the 2014 groups I know, I feel like Laboum is the closest one to disbandment. Which is really sad cause they have a lot of potential in terms of their concept and as a whole group. The only member we hear so much from is Solbin esp. lately on her role in Backstreet Rookie. But except for her, we didn't hear fuzz from other members besides from their IG posts," explained one netizen.
CLC
Although CLC has a lot more to prove before reaching its 7th year as a group, a lot would say that the group is the closest to disband so far. One netizen even pointed out that the girl's agency is more focused on another girl group that is currently popular in South Korea.
"CLC, on the other hand, is the closest one so far. I think Cube is too focus on (G)I-DLE (no offense to the girls. I love them but I can't help but to see it this way sometimes) that they barely give attention to CLC. But who knows, maybe this upcoming CB might change Cube's mind," the comment said.
The 7-curse superstition may sound common and trivial, but in K-pop it is defined as the year when most K-pop artists whether groups or solos, usually end their contracts. In Korea, all contracts between the artist and the label must be approved by the government commission to have a fair treatment and to avoid slavery agreements.
There is a maximum of seven years in most cases and this is the crucial year whether the artists will renew or opt to leave. Some would end up not renewing, and it often lead to team breakup.
